Dance Floor Edge Rails: Male vs Female, Left vs Right Corners

Your crew gets to the venue, lays the floor, and reaches for the last corner. The rail in hand is a female and the floor needs a male. Now a $99.98 part is holding up a wedding, and your best option is a bare edge. Dance floor edge rails have a naming system that looks confusing until you see the logic, and ordering the right piece once saves a truck trip.

What are male and female dance floor edge rails?

They are the two ends of a camlock connection. The listings say the camlock locks into the male end, so every join needs one of each. The Black Straight Edge Male Rail and Black Straight Edge Female Rail are sold as separate parts, each $99.98.

Each straight rail is 48" long and 5" wide, with a listed weight of 5.24 lbs. That matches the 4' panel edge, so one rail covers one panel side.

The photo shows a long cam lock wrench in use. It is the tool that tightens every rail connection, and it is sold separately from the rails.

How do you tell left from right corner rails?

Corner rails come in left and right versions, each in male and female. The listing for the Silver Left Female Corner Rail describes it as tailored for outer left installation. Its mirror image is the right corner.

Check the part you are replacing before you order. Match the finish, the corner side, and the male or female end of the broken piece, and photograph it if you are unsure. When in doubt, call us before you buy.

How many rails does each dance floor size need?

Count the perimeter in feet and divide by four. Every 4' of edge takes one rail, and four of those pieces are corners. The 16' x 16' floor lists 16 pieces of edge trim, which fits that math.

  • 12' x 12': 12 rails, 4 corners and 8 straight.
  • 16' x 16': 16 rails, 4 corners and 12 straight.
  • 16' x 20': 18 rails, 4 corners and 14 straight.
  • 24' x 24': 24 rails, 4 corners and 20 straight.

At 5.24 lbs each, 16 rails add about 84 lbs to the load, well inside the 1,500 lb rating of the dance floor cart. Floors that ship as kits include their own trim. The 16' x 16' White Portable Marquee Dance Floor with Silver Edge Trim lists 16 pieces and 2 camlock wrenches. Confirm the rail count on a listing before you order spares.

Black, silver or gold: which finish fits which floor?

Match the rail to your fleet and your clients. The edge collection offers black, silver, gold and classic gold finishes, in straight, left corner and right corner styles. Silver reads clean with white panels, black frames a chestnut and white floor, and gold dresses up a wedding.

The Classic Gold Straight Edge Male Rail pairs with gold corners. The Black Left Female Corner Rail belongs on a black frame. Do not mix finishes on one edge unless the client asks for it.

Not every floor needs a new finish. If your rails are in good shape, changing the look is rarely worth the cost.

How do edge rails improve guest safety?

A rail gives the floor a defined border, so guests can see where the surface ends. The rails are listed as anodized aluminum and stand under an inch high (0.875" to 0.937" depending on finish). That low profile frames the edge without a tall lip to trip on.

Check the camlocks before every event. A rail that is not fully turned is the one that catches a heel.

What to add to the order

Buy rails with the wrench that locks them. The Cam Lock Wrench is $9.98, so keep one per crew member. The 36" Cam Lock Wrench Hex Key is $39.98 and gives longer reach.

If you are growing your fleet, the 24' x 24' chestnut and white floor needs 24 rails and ships with 4 wrenches. See all options in Dance Floor Edges, Dance Floor Accessories and Dance Floors.

When this is not the right choice: if you are buying a complete floor kit, the trim is already in the box, and you only need spares. Do not buy a full rail set for a floor that has one.

Know your male from your female and your left from your right, and the corner never holds up the party. Browse Dance Floor Edges or call us with a photo of the rail you need.
