Chiavari Chair Buyer's Guide

Nobody photographs a banquet stack chair. Nobody runs a hand along the back of a folding chair on the way to their seat.

The Chiavari is different, and it has been since a cabinetmaker in a Ligurian port town started turning them in 1807. Guests touch it. They lean on it. They photograph it from eighteen inches away at eleven at night, and post it before the cake is cut.

It is also commercial equipment. A venue buys four hundred of them and then lives with them for a decade — stacked ten high, wheeled down a service corridor, loaded wet, unloaded in the dark.

That is the whole buying problem in one sentence. You buy them four hundred at a time. They get judged one at a time.

This post covers what changed in 2026, and how the eight Chiavari constructions differ once they leave the photograph.

Chiavari 2.0 is a new category, not a new finish

Every other chair in the range is a version of the 1807 original. Same footprint. Same seat height. Same proportions, built from a different material.

The two chairs below are not that. They are wider, taller in the seat, upholstered in silicone rather than vinyl, and set on glides that level themselves.

Three things separate the collection from the classic range. All three are the kind of detail nobody notices until it is missing.

• A silicone seat. Vinyl is what event seating has always used. Vinyl is also what cracks, discolours and takes a stain from a spilled Malbec. Silicone wipes clean, and it resists staining, cracking and discolouration.
• Self-levelling swivel glides. Multidirectional feet that adapt to uneven flooring on their own. Every venue has a room where the floor moves. Every venue has somebody whose job is finding the chair that rocks during cocktail hour. These feet remove that job.
• Integrated stacking protection. Purpose-built guards that keep finish off finish in the stack. A Champagne Gold chair rarely fails structurally. It fails cosmetically, one corridor at a time.

The self-levelling swivel glides. They adapt to the floor so your staff do not have to.

Both chairs carry a commercial-grade aluminium frame, a 2,000 lb static rating, ten years of total coverage, and ship fully assembled.

Bellissimo: the classic, rebuilt at scale

Bellissimo, head on. The back is a solid upholstered panel rather than turned rungs.

Sit in a standard Chiavari, then sit in this one. The difference arrives before you have thought about it.

The frame is wider. The seat sits at 19.5 inches against the 17.5 the rest of the range runs. The back is a solid upholstered panel instead of a ladder of turned rungs.

That two-inch seat height is the most consequential number here. A 17.5-inch seat at a 30-inch banquet table is correct, and has been for two centuries. A 19.5-inch seat is dining-room height. It changes the posture of the person in it — more upright, eye to eye across a 60-inch round instead of looking slightly up at everyone.

The trade is honest. At 17.4 lbs this is the heaviest Chiavari we make, nearly three times the aluminium classic. It is not the chair for a crew setting four hundred covers in an hour. It is the chair for the room that gets set once, photographed, and left standing.

The Bellissimo is the quiet one - this is not!

The back is a geometric lattice — crossed members forming a diamond grid, each carrying the same bamboo turning as the legs. From the front it reads as a clean upholstered panel. From behind, it reads as architecture.

A ballroom set with three hundred of these does not look like a ballroom with chairs in it. It looks designed.

The number that changes your seating plan

The classic Resin Steel Skeleton™ Chiavari: 15.5" wide, 17.5" seat, open ladder back.

A classic Chiavari is 15.5 inches wide. The Bellissimo is 20.25 inches.

Four and three-quarter inches per chair is not a detail. It is a seating-plan decision. Ten Bellissimos will not fit where ten classics fit.

At a 60-inch round, plan the 2.0 collection at eight covers where you would have run ten. Specify it in rooms where guest count was never the constraint. That is the same room, more comfortably seated, and it photographs like a different property.

The seven classic constructions

From six feet away in a photograph they are the same chair. In a warehouse they are seven different purchases, with a 3,500 lb spread in rated capacity and an eight-year spread in coverage.

Static capacity is a load-test rating under a centred, distributed load. It is not a recommended occupant weight. Warranty figures are total published coverage including free extended years, and can vary by finish within a collection.

Three things that table tells you:

• The strongest chair is not the heaviest. Steel Skeleton™ holds 4,000 lbs at 11.4 lbs — the same weight as ToughResin™, which holds half that. Your crew handles the identical object. The difference is entirely inside it.
• Seat height barely moves. Three-quarters of an inch across all seven. You can mix constructions across a property and nobody reads it as a mismatch. Colour is what gives a mixed fleet away, never height.
• Aluminium is its own argument. 6.3 lbs at 2,000 lbs is the best strength-to-weight ratio in the classic range, and it is the one construction published for salt air and snow.

Two things worth knowing before you order

Buy the whole room in one production run. A top-up order placed four years later, from the same SKU and the same finish code, will not necessarily match the chairs your guests are already sitting on. The one that is a shade off is the one somebody notices at table eleven without knowing why. If you are phasing a purchase, get the SKU and finish code into the file now, while the person who placed the first order still works there.

Order the dolly on the same purchase order. Almost no Chiavari dies at an event. It dies in a corridor, on a dolly loaded one chair too high, against a doorframe. One freight consolidation instead of two, and the labour saving starts on the first room turn rather than the fiftieth.

The chair nobody mentions, in the room everybody remembers.

And then the room is set

It is ten past five. The linen is down, the uplighting is on the warm amber the client picked off a phone screen in March, and somebody is walking the room backwards with two fingers out, brushing the crest rail of every chair, pushing each one a half-inch in until the backs make one continuous line around the table.

Nobody will thank her for it. Nobody will mention the chairs at all, which is the point. A room only gets talked about when something in it is wrong.
